When I interviewed the San Juan Wildlife Federation’s board members for an outdoors story on the shooting range, I don’t know why, but I never intended on shooting guns that day. I guess I should have been prepared for that, but for some reason that thought didn’t cross my mind!
After our interview, I asked if I could take pictures of the group’s members shooting in the indoor shooting range. They turned the tables on me and said, “How about we take pictures of YOU shooting?” So I figured, when in Rome, do as the Romans.
I’ve shot guns before, but there was something a intimidating about shooting in front of these guys — guys who do this on a regular basis and have such a passion about shooting. I did not want to disappoint them.
After covering the safety basics and taking the proper stance, I was ready to shoot. Gun in my hand, the target and sights in my view I went for it. I was actually pretty proud of my target and may or may not have brought it home to hang on my fridge!
Shooting and target practice is definitely a fun sport and a great way to challenge yourself. The San Juan Wildlife Federation has dozens of competitions and activities for everyone from sports clays to .22 rifle competitions. Check out their website for information and a calendar of events.
